EDITORS COMMENTS
Cottingham Road, Hull, Yorkshire, after it was bombed in the Blitz. November 1940. This haunting print captures the devastating aftermath of an air raid during the infamous Hull Blitz in World War II. The once bustling Cottingham Road now lies in ruins, a stark reminder of the relentless attacks by the German Luftwaffe on this English port city. The Hull Blitz was a series of large-scale bombings that occurred throughout March 1941 and resulted in over 200 deaths. However, it was during the nights of May 7/8 and May 8/9 that some of the most concentrated attacks took place, claiming nearly 400 lives. Another significant assault occurred in July 1941 with an additional 143 fatalities. Hull endured more than a thousand hours under alert from June 19th, 1940 to 1945 as bombs rained down upon its streets. Tragically, almost twelve hundred people lost their lives as a result of these relentless bombings. As we gaze upon this image frozen in time circa November 9th, 1940, we are reminded not only of the destruction caused by war but also of the resilience and strength exhibited by those who lived through such dark times. Let us never forget their sacrifice and strive for peace so that future generations may be spared from such devastation.
