EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a vintage poster produced by the London, Midland & Scottish Railways (LMS) to promote rail travel to Fleetwood in Lancashire. Fleetwood, situated at the mouth of the River Wyre, proudly served as the bustling fishing port on the west coast during its heyday. The town also boasted an extensive coastwise shipping trade that contributed to its vibrant maritime atmosphere. The artwork featured in this poster was skillfully crafted by Norman Wilkinson, a renowned marine painter who honed his artistic talents at Portsmouth and Southsea Schools of Art. Wilkinson's expertise shines through as he captures the essence of Fleetwood's industrial prowess with precision and finesse. Measuring 1016 mm x 635 mm, this remarkable piece transports viewers back in time to an era when railway posters were not only informative but also works of art themselves. It is worth noting that Norman Wilkinson designed posters for various railways and even organized a series for the prestigious Royal Academy on behalf of the London & Midlands Railway (LMR) in 1924. As part of National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, this print serves as a testament to both Fleetwood's rich history and Britain's love affair with rail travel.
