Menai Suspension Bridge, Wales, c 1922-1947
Original oil painting by Norman Wilkinson for use on a London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) poster. The road suspension bridge over the Menai Straits was designed by Thomas Telford (1757-1834) and was built between 1818 and 1826 by Dorman, Long and Co Ltd. The overall length of the bridge is 1000 feet and the central span measures 579 feet. The bridge deck was damaged by a gale in 1839 and the deck was replaced in 1893 with a steel one. Major repairs were carried out in 1940. It is near the Britannia tubular railway bridge designed by Robert Stephenson (1803-1859)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Menai Suspension Bridge, a true testament to engineering brilliance and timeless beauty. Painted by the talented artist Norman Wilkinson for a London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) poster, this original oil painting captures the essence of this remarkable structure. Designed by the legendary Thomas Telford and constructed between 1818 and 1826 by Dorman, Long and Co Ltd. , the Menai Suspension Bridge spans across the picturesque Menai Straits in Wales. With an impressive overall length of 1000 feet, it boasts a central span measuring 579 feet. Throughout its history, this bridge has endured various challenges. In 1839, it suffered damage from a powerful gale that led to the replacement of its deck with steel in 1893. Major repairs were also undertaken in 1940 to ensure its continued functionality. Adjacent to another architectural marvel - Robert Stephenson's Britannia tubular railway bridge - this suspension bridge stands as an enduring symbol of human ingenuity amidst nature's grandeur. The serene backdrop of boats gently gliding through calm waters against a backdrop of majestic snowdonia mountains adds further charm to this scenic landscape. Preserved within National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, this print allows us to appreciate both the historical significance and aesthetic allure of one of Britain's most celebrated bridges – an everlasting masterpiece connecting land and sea with grace and elegance.
