Airman Tobacco, 1929
Players Airman Tobaccos pull-forward counter card. The top section is shaped like a cloud and is painted with a blue sky and white clouds. In the centre is a small sky-writing aeroplane which has just written " Players Please". Centre top is a pack of Airman Mixture tobacco and to the right, where the back meets the base, is a pack of Airman Navy Cut which pops forward when the card is opened. On the left hand side is the connection where another pack of tobacco should be, which has been lost. The text on the base reads " PLAYERs // AIRMAN // TOBACCOS // 9 1/2D // PER OZ.". On the reverse is a hand-written note in faded red ink " OK // 12.4.29 // GG". There is a support to allow the card to pull forward and stand upright. There is a label which reads " MARDONS // WINDOW NOVELTIES // EMBOSSED SHOWCARDS / &C, &C // VARNISHERS // GELATINERS & FRAME MAKERS // BRISTOL & LONDON."

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures a unique advertising piece from 1929, showcasing the iconic Airman Tobacco by John Player and Sons. The pull-forward counter card is an exquisite display of creativity and craftsmanship. The top section resembles a fluffy cloud painted with serene blue skies and white clouds, evoking a sense of freedom and adventure. In the center, a small sky-writing aeroplane gracefully etches the words "Players Please" adding an element of whimsy to the composition. Positioned prominently at the center top is a pack of Airman Mixture tobacco, while on the right side, we find another pack called Airman Navy Cut that intriguingly pops forward when the card is opened. However, it's worth noting that on the left-hand side where another pack should be placed, it appears to have been lost over time. This detail adds an air of nostalgia to this historical artifact. The base proudly displays text indicating that these premium tobaccos were available for purchase at 9 1/2D per ounce. On its reverse side lies a faded red ink note stating "OK // 12.4.29 // GG" perhaps signifying approval or confirmation related to this advertisement. Supported by a stand allowing it to be displayed upright, this remarkable piece also features a label from Mardons Window Novelties—a renowned company specializing in embossed showcards among other things—based in Bristol and London. Overall, this photograph offers us an enchanting glimpse into Nottingham's past advertising landscape while celebrating both military aviation and fine tobacco products like Airman Tobacco by John Player and Sons
