The Prince and Princess of Wales, later to become King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, were in the first skip to descend the inclined Boscawen Shaft. Pictured here are the Duke of St Albans, the Earl of Mount Edgecumbe, Captain de Grey and Edward St Aubyn. In this photograph, the despatching party, seen in TRURI : 2011.11.7, have stepped back into the housing. The brakesman, Captain John Rowe has taken his position in the rear of the skip. This print takes us back to a significant moment in history - the descent of the third Royal Party into the depths of Botallack Mine, located in St Just in Penwith, Cornwall. Dated 24th July 1865, this image captures an extraordinary event attended by distinguished guests including the Prince and Princess of Wales (later known as King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra). The photograph showcases a group of notable figures who accompanied the royal couple on their underground adventure. Among them are the Duke of St Albans, the Earl of Mount Edgecumbe, Captain de Grey, and Edward St Aubyn. As they stand near the inclined Boscawen Shaft entrance, we can see that they have stepped back into a protective housing while preparing for their descent.
