Carvedras Smelting Works, Truro, Cornwall. Around 1892

Workmen posed with tin ingots. The man with the white beard is James Symons and the boy kneeling on the right is John Penrose. The tin ingots read: Bolitho and Sons Penzance and Chyandour, with the lamb and flag trademark. This photograph was probably taken in 1892 when the operators, Daubuz and Company, amalgamated with Bolitho, Sons and Company and R.R. Michell and Company to form the Consolidated Tin Smelting Company Ltd of Penzance. It closed in 1898. Photographer: Unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of Cornwall's mining industry. Taken around 1892, it showcases the Carvedras Smelting Works in Truro, Cornwall. The image features a group of proud workmen posing alongside tin ingots, providing us with a glimpse into their daily lives and laborious efforts. Amongst the men stands James Symons, distinguished by his striking white beard, symbolizing wisdom and experience gained through years of hard work. Kneeling on the right is young John Penrose, representing the next generation ready to carry on this age-old tradition. The tin ingots prominently display the inscription "Bolitho and Sons Penzance and Chyandour" accompanied by their iconic lamb and flag trademark. This detail hints at an important development in Cornish mining history: the amalgamation of Daubuz and Company with Bolitho, Sons and Company along with R. R. Michell and Company to form Consolidated Tin Smelting Company Ltd of Penzance in 1892. Sadly, despite its significance as depicted here, Carvedras Smelting Works closed its doors just six years after this photograph was taken in 1898. Nevertheless, this image immortalizes not only a specific moment but also represents an entire era when Cornwall's mining industry thrived. Though we cannot attribute this remarkable snapshot to any particular photographer due to its unknown origin; it remains an invaluable piece held within Royal Cornwall Museum's collection—a testament to
