Rashleigh almshouses, Polmear, Tywardreath, Cornwall, 1959
The Rashleigh almshouses were originally built around 1800 by William Rashleigh as four cottages. They were extended later in the 19th century by three more cottages and, in 1855, a small hospital block was added. The buildings were restored in 1977 to 1978 when the seven almshouses were converted into three cottages, with extensions at the back. Photographer: Charles Woolf

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic Rashleigh almshouses in Polmear, Tywardreath, Cornwall, back in 1959. Originally constructed by William Rashleigh around 1800 as four cottages, these buildings served as a testament to philanthropy and charity during that era. As time went on, three more cottages were added in the 19th century, followed by a small hospital block in 1855. The significance of these almshouses lies not only in their architectural beauty but also in their purpose: providing housing for elderly individuals from the gentry class. These structures symbolize the welfare initiatives taken to support those who had contributed significantly to society throughout their lives. In this particular snapshot captured by photographer Charles Woolf, we witness a moment frozen in time before restoration work took place between 1977 and 1978. The restoration transformed the seven almshouses into three cottages while incorporating extensions at the rear of the buildings. Today, these listed buildings stand as a reminder of Cornwall's rich history and its commitment to caring for its elderly population. They serve as an enduring tribute to both William Rashleigh's original vision and subsequent efforts made over generations to ensure dignified living conditions for those deserving of it
