18th century electrostatic machine

Illustration of an eighteenth century electrostatic machine which appeared in Essai sur l electricitie des corps, by Jean Antoine Nollet, Paris 1746. This illustration is from the second edition of 1750. The operator od the machine is turning the large capstan (right), which causes the alembic (glass globe, left) to rotate rapidly and build up a static charge. The charge could be drawn off by means of a conductor (not shown here). The machine was invented by G.M. Bose, born in Leipzig, 1710

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an 18th-century electrostatic machine, a groundbreaking invention that revolutionized the understanding of electricity. Featured in Jean Antoine Nollet's renowned book "Essai sur l electricitie des corps" this illustration from the second edition of 1750 transports us back to the early days of scientific exploration. Intriguingly, we witness the operator diligently turning the large capstan on the right side of the image. This motion sets into action a mesmerizing display as the alembic, a glass globe positioned on the left, starts rotating rapidly. With each rotation, an immense static charge builds up within it. The genius behind this ingenious contraption is G. M. Bose, born in Leipzig in 1710. His creation allowed scientists and researchers to delve deeper into studying electricity and its properties during this era. Although not depicted here, a conductor was used to draw off this accumulated charge for further experimentation and analysis. This remarkable device paved the way for significant advancements in electrical science and technology throughout history. As we gaze upon this historical artifact captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of humanity's insatiable curiosity and relentless pursuit of knowledge that has propelled us forward through centuries of scientific discovery.
