British particle physicist Adrian McKemey
Adrian McKemey. British particle physicist Adrian McKemey with one of the caesium iodide scintillat- ion crystals he has helped produce and maintain. These crystals give out pulses of light when they are hit by charged particles and radiation. Thousands of the crystals have been installed in the BaBar particle detector at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), California, USA. McKemey is a visiting professor at Stanford Univ- ersity. BaBar will detect the B mesons and anti-B mesons that result from positron-electron collisions. If B mesons decay at a different rate from anti-B mesons, this may explain why there is more matter than antimatter. Photographed in 1999

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases British particle physicist Adrian McKemey with one of the remarkable caesium iodide scintillation crystals that he has played a crucial role in producing and maintaining. These extraordinary crystals possess the incredible ability to emit pulses of light upon being struck by charged particles and radiation. Thousands of these cutting-edge crystals have been meticulously installed within the BaBar particle detector at the prestigious Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) located in California, USA. As a visiting professor at Stanford University, McKemey's expertise and dedication are invaluable to this groundbreaking project. The primary objective of BaBar is to detect both B mesons and anti-B mesons resulting from positron-electron collisions. By closely examining whether B mesons decay at a different rate compared to their antimatter counterparts, scientists hope to unravel one of the most profound mysteries in physics - why there exists an abundance of matter over antimatter in our universe. This awe-inspiring photograph was taken back in 1999, capturing McKemey's passion for his work as he stands proudly beside this significant scientific achievement. It serves as a testament not only to his contributions but also to the collective efforts made by researchers worldwide who tirelessly strive towards unraveling the secrets of our universe through innovative advancements like these scintillation crystals.
