Coloured SEM of common salt, sodium chloride
Salt. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of common salt, sodium chloride, recrystallised from distilled water. The salt crystal is built up from a cubic lattice of sodium and chloride ions. In the absence of impurities the exact cubic crystal form is produced. This micrograph shows that in practice this basic cube is usually disrupted by dislocations; these give rise to crystals with a variety of shapes, although they all retain the basic cubic symmetry. Magnification: x280 at 5x7cm size. x975 at 10x8ins

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate beauty of common salt, sodium chloride. Through a colored scanning electron microscope (SEM), we are granted a mesmerizing glimpse into the world of microscopic crystals. The image reveals how these salt crystals are formed by a cubic lattice structure composed of sodium and chloride ions. In its purest form, this crystal lattice takes on an exact cubic shape, devoid of any impurities. However, as depicted in this micrograph, dislocations disrupt the pristine cube formation, resulting in crystals with diverse shapes while still retaining their fundamental cubic symmetry. The magnification level provided allows us to appreciate the fine details present within each crystal. At 5x7cm size, we can observe these structures at x280 magnification; however, for those seeking even greater insight into their complexity and intricacy, at 10x8ins size they can be examined at an astonishing x975 magnification. This photograph not only serves as a testament to the scientific wonders that lie beyond our naked eye's perception but also highlights the significance of salt in various aspects of our lives. From enhancing flavors in food to preserving it for longer shelf life, sodium chloride plays an essential role in countless culinary creations and food preservation techniques.
