Craters on Mercury, MESSENGER image C016 / 9720

Craters on Mercury, MESSENGER image. North is towards top left. This area, over 1900 kilometres across, consists mostly of as-yet unnamed craters in the eastern part of the Solitudo Persephones quadrangle in the southern hemisphere of Mercury, the planet closest to the Sun. Craters include Magritte (lower left), Neruda (far centre left), and Sher-Gil (upper left). The Disney ( Mickey Mouse ) set of craters (bottom left) is directly left of the Magritte crater. The MESSENGER spacecraft entered orbit around Mercury in March 2011. Image obtained on 17 December 2012, by the Wide Angle Camera (WAC) of the Mercury Dual Imaging System (MDIS)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the mesmerizing craters on Mercury, revealing a breathtaking view of our neighboring planet's surface. Taken by NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft on 17 December 2012, this image showcases an expansive area spanning over 1900 kilometers in the Solitudo Persephones quadrangle of Mercury's southern hemisphere. The composition predominantly consists of numerous unnamed impact craters, each leaving its distinct mark on the planetary landscape. Among them are notable features like Magritte, Neruda, and Sher-Gil craters, which can be identified in the lower left, far center left, and upper left respectively. However, what truly adds a touch of whimsy to this celestial scene is the presence of the Disney (Mickey Mouse) set of craters located directly to the left of Magritte crater. As we explore this extraterrestrial terrain through MESSENGER's lens, it becomes evident that Mercury bears witness to countless cosmic collisions throughout its history. The intricate details captured by the Wide Angle Camera (WAC) of MDIS showcase these impact sites as textured and rugged surface features. Since entering orbit around Mercury in March 2011, MESSENGER has provided invaluable insights into our solar system's smallest planet. This particular image serves as a testament to humanity's insatiable curiosity about distant worlds and our relentless pursuit of knowledge in planetary science.
