Fossil trilobite from the Cambrian period

Trilobite. Fossil trilobite, Eccaparadoxides sp. from the Cambrian period (600-525 million years ago). The trilobites were marine arthropods which were once extremely common throughout the worlds oceans for millions of years. Most species are thought to have lived on the sea floor, where they probably scuttled around in search of food like modern crabs do. They had large eyes to help them see in the darkness of the seabed. Their flexible backs allowed them to roll up into a tight ball when being attacked by predators. They became extinct about 65 million years ago, about the same time as the dinosaurs. This individual was found in Morocco

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable fossil trilobite from the Cambrian period, specifically Eccaparadoxides sp. These ancient marine arthropods once thrived in the world's oceans for millions of years, leaving behind an enduring legacy. Trilobites were incredibly abundant during their time and are believed to have inhabited the sea floor, scuttling around much like modern-day crabs in search of sustenance. Equipped with large eyes that aided them in navigating through the darkness of the seabed, trilobites possessed a unique defense mechanism. Their flexible backs allowed them to curl up into a tight ball when faced with predators, ensuring their survival amidst countless threats. However, despite their resilience and adaptability, these fascinating creatures met their demise approximately 65 million years ago - coinciding with the extinction event that wiped out dinosaurs. Discovered in Morocco by passionate paleontologists or avid fossil enthusiasts alike, this particular individual serves as a tangible link to our planet's ancient past. As we gaze upon this exquisite relic from another era captured by Science Photo Library's lens, we are reminded of Earth's ever-evolving history and its diverse inhabitants throughout time. Let us marvel at this snapshot frozen in stone – an emblematic representation of nature's extraordinary journey spanning over half a billion years.
