Photo Mug : Hair root, SEM
Home Decor from Science Photo Library
Hair root, SEM
Hair root. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the root (red) and part of the shaft (yellow) of a human hair. The base of the hair is known as the hair bulb and is the site of hair growth. It is usually located in a hair follicle in the skin, at the base of which is an area called the dermal papilla. This region is supplied with blood, which gives nourishment for the production of new hair. As new cells form in the follicle they die, become keratinized and pigmented, and get pushed out to form the shaft of the hair. Magnification: x130 when printed 10cm high

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a hair root, captured using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The image reveals the vibrant colors of the hair root and part of its shaft, with red representing the root and yellow depicting the shaft. The base of the hair, known as the hair bulb, takes center stage in this photograph. It is within this bulb that new hair growth occurs, making it an essential site for understanding our follicular anatomy. Situated within a hair follicle in our skin lies another crucial component called the dermal papilla. This region receives nourishment from blood vessels to support the production of new hairs. As cells form within these follicles, they eventually die off and become keratinized and pigmented before being pushed outwards to create what we see as our visible strands or shafts of hair. With a magnification level set at x130 when printed 10cm high, this SEM image offers us an up-close look at one aspect of human body anatomy that often goes unnoticed by our naked eyes. Its vibrant colors and detailed structure make it both scientifically intriguing and visually stunning.
