Historical artwork of the constellation of Cancer
Cancer. Coloured historical artwork of the constellation of Cancer. The constellation is shown as a lobster or crayfish. Cancer is the fourth sign of the Zodiac. The Sun is in Cancer between 22 June and 22 July. It is a small constellation, with no bright stars. The celebrated star cluster Praesepe, or the beehive, is at the animals heart, at the very centre of its body. The path of the Sun through the sky, the ecliptic, is shown by the black and red line at centre. This artwork is based on a sky map by the Polish-German astronomer Johannes Hevelius (1611- 1687), published posthumously in 1690

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning piece of historical artwork depicting the constellation of Cancer. In this colored illustration, Cancer is portrayed as a magnificent lobster or crayfish, symbolizing its unique representation in the zodiac. As the fourth sign of the Zodiac, Cancer corresponds to a period between 22 June and 22 July when the Sun aligns with this celestial formation. The artwork beautifully captures the essence of Cancer, despite it being one of the smaller constellations without any prominent stars. At its core lies Praesepe, also known as "the beehive" an acclaimed star cluster that resides at the very center of Cancer's body. The artist has meticulously depicted this feature to emphasize its significance within this cosmic creature. Intriguingly, a black and red line gracefully traverses through the artwork representing the ecliptic - the path followed by our Sun across our sky throughout each year. This inclusion adds depth and context to Hevelius' original sky map from 1690 upon which this artwork is based. With elements encompassing science, astronomy, artistry, cosmology, and stellar phenomena all intertwined into one breathtaking composition; it serves as a testament to Johannes Hevelius' profound contributions as a Polish-German astronomer during his lifetime (1611-1687). This remarkable print allows us to appreciate both scientific knowledge and artistic expression simultaneously while exploring humanity's fascination with astrology and our place within the cosmos.
