The New Zealand born physicist Sir E. Rutherford
The New Zealand born physicist Sir Ernest Rutherford (1871-1937). The photograph was taken to commemorate the Nobel Prize for chemistry which he received in 1908. Rutherford may be considered the father of nuclear physics for his studies on radioactive decay and the atomic structure. He identified three types of radiations produced by radioactive decay which he called alpha, beta and gamma rays. In 1911 he proposed an atomic model in which the positive charge of the atom (protons) was concentrated in a very small region, the nucleus. He also showed that the structure of an atom could be changed (nuclear transmutation) by bombarding it with alpha particles

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the brilliant mind and groundbreaking achievements of Sir Ernest Rutherford, a distinguished physicist hailing from New Zealand. Taken to commemorate his well-deserved Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1908, this image showcases the man who is often referred to as the father of nuclear physics. Rutherford's pioneering research on radioactive decay and atomic structure revolutionized our understanding of the fundamental building blocks of matter. He identified three types of radiations emitted during radioactive decay: alpha, beta, and gamma rays. In 1911, he proposed an atomic model that introduced the concept of a concentrated positive charge within a tiny region called the nucleus. Beyond theoretical contributions, Rutherford demonstrated that it was possible to alter an atom's structure through nuclear transmutation by bombarding it with alpha particles. His profound discoveries laid the foundation for countless advancements in modern physics. As we gaze upon this remarkable portrait, we are reminded not only of Rutherford's immense intellect but also his status as a Nobel laureate and recipient of one of science's most prestigious accolades. This photograph serves as a testament to his enduring legacy and contribution to humanity's quest for knowledge about our universe at its most fundamental level.
