Nicholo Paganini, Italian violinist

Nicholo Paganini (1782-1840), Italian violinist. Paganini started playing the violin from the age of seven, and he was immediately recognised as a prodigious talent. In 1801, at the age of 18, he was appointed first violin of the Republic of Lucca. He became known across Europe during a concert tour in 1828. By 1834, he had retired from concert playing, his health declined and he died aged 57. Compositions included 24 Caprices for Solo Violin (1819), written between 1802 and 1817. Famous violins used by Paganini include Il Cannone Guarnerius (1743). Photograph of an artwork by Gustav Nehrlich (1807-1840)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the legendary Italian violinist, Nicholo Paganini. Born in 1782, Paganini's extraordinary musical journey began at the tender age of seven when his exceptional talent on the violin was immediately recognized. At just 18 years old, he was appointed as the first violin of the Republic of Lucca, marking the beginning of a remarkable career. Paganini's fame spread like wildfire across Europe during his concert tour in 1828, solidifying his status as a musical prodigy and virtuoso. However, by 1834, declining health forced him to retire from performing. Tragically, this brilliant composer passed away at the age of 57. Renowned for his compositions such as "24 Caprices for Solo Violin" written between 1802 and 1817, Paganini left an indelible mark on classical music history. Notably, he played these masterpieces on Il Cannone Guarnerius (1743), one of many famous violins that accompanied him throughout his illustrious career. Captured beautifully by Gustav Nehrlich (1807-1840) in this stunning artwork-turned-photo print from Science Photo Library's Harris and Ewing Collection, Paganini's intense gaze reflects both passion and dedication to his craft. This portrait encapsulates not only a moment frozen in time but also pays homage to an influential figure who forever shaped European music culture with his unparalleled talent.
