Podkamennaya Tunguska Valley in 1927

Ground zero : the site of the Tunguska event. In the early hours of 30 June 1908, a huge fireball was observed low in the sky over western Siberia. Shortly afterwards, an enormous explosion was heard. The explosion caused incredible damage, flattening over 3000 square kilometres of forests. The site of the explosion was near the town of Vanavara, in the Podkamennaya Tunguska River valley. It is now thought that the event (estimated equivalence 2 million tonnes of TNT) was caused by a meteoroid about 50 metres in diameter breaking up and exploding in the atmosphere, although no major fragments or craters have been found. This photo was taken in 1927

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1927, capturing a hauntingly beautiful view of the Podkamennaya Tunguska Valley. Little did anyone know that this serene landscape was once ground zero for one of the most mysterious and powerful events in history - the Tunguska event. In the early hours of June 30,1908, witnesses were awestruck by a massive fireball illuminating the skies over western Siberia. Moments later, an earth-shattering explosion reverberated through the region. The aftermath was devastating; over 3,000 square kilometers of dense forests lay flattened in ruins. Located near Vanavara town within the Podkamennaya Tunguska River valley, this site became synonymous with destruction and intrigue. Scientists now believe that a meteoroid approximately 50 meters in diameter disintegrated and exploded in Earth's atmosphere, causing an explosion equivalent to two million tonnes of TNT. Astonishingly though, no major fragments or craters have been discovered thus far. As we gaze upon this photograph frozen in time, we are reminded of nature's immense power and its ability to leave us with unanswered questions. The untamed beauty of this untouched taiga environment juxtaposes against the cataclysmic forces unleashed here more than a century ago. Thanks to Science Photo Library's archival collection, we can delve into history and ponder on humanity's quest for understanding our planet's mysteries – from meteorite craters to remote
