Shukhov broadcasting tower

The Shukhov radio tower, Moscow, photographed at night. Also known as the Shabolovka tower, this broadcasting tower was designed by architect Vladimir Shukhov to serve the Russian capital. The tower is 160 metres tall and is made from a lattice of steel known as a hyperboloid - the vertical steel components describe hyperbolas over the surface of the conical tower. This design minimised wind loading on the structure. It was built in 1920-22 and is found on Shabolovka Street a few kilometres south of the Kremlin

Designed by renowned architect Vladimir Shukhov, this towering structure stands at an impressive height of 160 meters and serves as a vital communication hub for the Russian capital. Illuminated against the night sky, its vibrant orange lighting creates a mesmerizing spectacle. The unique design of this lattice steel tower is truly remarkable. Constructed using a hyperboloid framework, its vertical steel components gracefully trace hyperbolas over the surface of the conical structure. This ingenious design not only adds to its aesthetic appeal but also minimizes wind loading on the tower. Built between 1920 and 1922, this architectural marvel has become a popular tourist attraction in Moscow. Located on Shabolovka Street just a few kilometers south of the Kremlin, it symbolizes Russia's technological prowess and innovation in aerial transmission. The intricate lattice gridwork resembles a net that connects people through broadcasted radio and television signals across vast distances. Its horizontal lines intersect with precision to form a stunning visual representation of engineering excellence. Captured by Science Photo Library during nighttime hours, this print beautifully encapsulates both the grandeur and technical brilliance embodied by Vladimir Shukhov's masterpiece - an enduring testament to human ingenuity in creating structures that stand tall amidst modern advancements.
