Thunderstorms, space shuttle image C016 / 3867

Thunderstorms. Space shuttle image of multiple thunderstorm cells (lower frame and at upper right) in Earths atmosphere. This view is from the space shuttle Discovery, at a distance of around 240 kilometres. These thunderstorms are located about 16 degrees south-east of Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean. Examples of every stage of a developing thunderstorm are present, from the building cauliflower tops to the mature anvil phase. The flattened anvil tops of the clouds form at an altitude of around 15 kilometres, at the tropopause, the boundary between the troposphere and stratosphere. Photographed on mission STS-64 (9-20 September 1994)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the awe-inspiring power and beauty of thunderstorms as seen from space. Taken by the space shuttle Discovery during mission STS-64 in September 1994, this image showcases multiple thunderstorm cells scattered across Earth's atmosphere. Located approximately 16 degrees southeast of Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean, these storms exhibit various stages of development, from their towering cauliflower tops to the mature anvil phase. The flattened anvil tops of these clouds form at a remarkable altitude of around 15 kilometers, precisely at the tropopause - marking the boundary between Earth's troposphere and stratosphere. This unique perspective offers a rare glimpse into meteorological phenomena that shape our planet's weather patterns. As we gaze upon this photograph, we are reminded of both the fragility and resilience of our planet. The vast expanse of ocean beneath these tumultuous storm systems serves as a reminder that Earth is predominantly covered by water - a delicate balance that influences global climate patterns. Taken during a time when space exploration was advancing rapidly in the late 20th century, this image represents humanity's continuous quest for knowledge about our home planet and beyond. It symbolizes NASA's commitment to capturing extraordinary moments through astronaut photography while providing valuable insights into atmospheric dynamics and weather forecasting. This stunning visual testament to nature's might is not only scientifically significant but also artistically captivating – showcasing Mother Nature’s ability to create breathtaking wonders even amidst turbulent conditions.
