It was the Astronomer Royals job to keep accurate tables of the positions of the Moon and stars for use in navigation by English ships. In 1811, John Pond was Astronomer Royal at Greenwich. He introduced the worlds first public time signal, the dropping of the Greenwich time ball (not seen here) at 1pm every day. Greenwich was the site of the Royal Observatory until the end of World War II
