Scarborough offers sport to big game anglers landing 9ft tunny, new to the North Sea

Scarborough offers sport to big game anglers landing 9ft tunny, new to the North Sea.
The fact that Tunny are to be caught in the North Sea was proved recently when a speciman 9ft 9 in long and weighing 600lb caught 14 miles of Scarborough, was landed there on September 7 from the Yarmouth steam drifter Ascendant. It is only during the last three years that the Tunny has appeared in the North Sea, owing it is said, to the water having become warmer. Previously it had occured only in the Atlantic and Mediterranean.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a momentous event in Scarborough's fishing history. The image showcases the thrill of big game angling as a group of skilled anglers proudly display their remarkable catch - a 9-foot tunny, an extraordinary sight in the North Sea. Taken on September 7,1929, this photograph documents the first recorded appearance of Tunny in these waters. Weighing an astonishing 600 pounds and measuring nearly ten feet long, this magnificent specimen was caught just 14 miles off the coast of Scarborough by the Yarmouth steam drifter Ascendant. The arrival of Tunny in the North Sea is attributed to rising water temperatures over recent years. Previously confined to the Atlantic and Mediterranean regions, these powerful fish have now found their way into new territory. This discovery has opened up thrilling opportunities for sport fishermen seeking exhilarating challenges. In this snapshot from between-the-wars Britain, we witness a man and young boy standing alongside their prized catch with pride shining through their faces. Fishing rods, lines, scales, reels - all essential tools for this daring pursuit - are visible amidst an industrial backdrop that emphasizes Scarborough's rich fishing heritage. This monochrome image transports us back to a time when sailing out into vast seas held both danger and excitement. It serves as a reminder that nature constantly surprises us with its wonders while showcasing human resilience and determination to explore uncharted territories.
