Blessing the plough at Chichester Cathedral.
The ancient ceremony of blessing the plough took place yesterday (Plough Sunday) at Chichester Cathedral when a plough was drawn in procession from the County Hall to the Cathedral. The plough was drawn by young farmers in knee length white coats with a ploughman at the stilts. In the Cathedral the plough was placed in front of the choir screen and the Bishop, Dr bell, preached a sermon. Farmers, workers and W L A members grouped themselves round the plough and the ploughman and the WLA representative invoked the Bishops blessing.
Photo shows, the Bishop of Chichester welcoming the plough on its arrival at the Cathedral.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to the year 1946, where an ancient ceremony is taking place at Chichester Cathedral. The occasion is Plough Sunday, a day dedicated to blessing the plough for a fruitful harvest. A procession commences from County Hall to the grand cathedral, with young farmers proudly drawing the plough while dressed in knee-length white coats. Leading them is a skilled ploughman on stilts, guiding their path. Inside the magnificent cathedral, amidst towering cassocks and an air of reverence, the plough finds its place in front of the choir screen. The Bishop of Chichester himself stands before it, ready to deliver his sermon. Farmers, workers, and members of the Women's Land Army (WLA) gather around this symbol of labor and fertility as they eagerly await divine intervention. The atmosphere is charged with anticipation as prayers are offered by both WLA representatives and the ploughman himself. In this moment frozen in time by TopFoto. co. uk's lens, we witness Bishop Dr Bell extending a warm welcome to this sacred implement upon its arrival at Chichester Cathedral. This monochrome portrait captures not only a religious ritual but also serves as a testament to centuries-old traditions that honor agriculture's vital role in sustaining communities. It reminds us of our deep connection with nature and our reliance on its bountiful blessings for survival.
