HMS Ark Royal
HMS Ark Royal is pictured operating off the coast of the UK. The Portsmouth based carrier was undergoing the next phase of her workup in becoming the Nations Strike Carrier in 2010.
She is the fifth vessel to bear the proud name. Ark Royal was built by Swan Hunters Ship Builders yard at Wallsend in December 1978 and launched by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. HMS Ark Royal was accepted into service on 1 July 1985 and finally Commissioned, again by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother on 1 November 1985.
HMS Ark Royal is larger than her 2 sisters, Invincible and Illustrious, at 211.4 metres (693 feet) long. She has a maximum beam of 35 metres (114.7 feet) and a displacement of 20, 235 tonnes.
4 Olympus gas turbine engines (like Concorde s) propel the ship, which give a maximum speed in excess of 30 knots. A steeper ski jump than in the other ships of this class is fitted at the forward end of the flight deck.
The ships motto is Zeal Does Not Rest
The British Army protects the United Kingdom's interests at home and abroad, providing a safe and secure environment in which all British citizens can live and prosper

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic HMS Ark Royal as it operates off the coast of the UK. The Portsmouth based carrier, in 2010, was diligently undergoing the next phase of its workup to become the Nation's Strike Carrier. This remarkable vessel is proudly named after its four predecessors and holds a rich history. Constructed by Swan Hunters Ship Builders yard at Wallsend in December 1978, HMS Ark Royal was launched by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. It officially entered service on July 1,1985, with a grand commissioning ceremony conducted once again by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother on November 1,1985. Distinguished from her two sisters, Invincible and Illustrious, HMS Ark Royal boasts impressive dimensions. Stretching an impressive length of 211.4 meters (693 feet) and having a maximum beam of 35 meters (114.7 feet), this vessel displaces an astounding weight of 20,235 tonnes. Powered by four Olympus gas turbine engines reminiscent of Concorde's technology, HMS Ark Royal can achieve speeds exceeding 30 knots. Notably differentiating itself from other ships in its class is a steeper ski jump located at the forward end of its flight deck. Embodying their motto "Zeal Does Not Rest" this iconic ship represents both strength and determination as it serves our nation dutifully.
