SA 24 NZ 27

Rugby Union - 1992 All Black Tour of South Africa - South Africa 24 New Zealand 27
Pieter Muller scores the second try for South Africa, at Ellis Park, Johannesburg.
This game would become known as the Return Test as it was the first match the Springboks played after their readmission to international rugby following their ban by the IRB due to apartheid in 1984. Ten South Africans made their international debuts.
There was controversy before kick-off when a minutes silence for victims of township violence was disrupted by jeers and anti-ANC chants from the predominantly white Afrikaaner crowd; South Africa flags were waved and the national anthem " Die Stem van Suid-Afrika" played over the PA system despite promises to the ANC from the SARFU not to do so. Consequently a match intended as a celebration of unity was perceived as an act of white defiance

EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures a significant moment in the history of rugby and South Africa. The image showcases Pieter Muller scoring the second try for South Africa during the 1992 All Black Tour at Ellis Park, Johannesburg. However, this match holds much deeper meaning than just a sporting event. Dubbed as the Return Test, it marked the Springboks' first international game after their readmission to rugby following a ban by the IRB due to apartheid in 1984. This match was intended to symbolize unity and reconciliation for a nation torn apart by racial segregation. Yet, controversy marred the occasion before kick-off when jeers and anti-ANC chants disrupted a minute's silence held for victims of township violence. The predominantly white Afrikaaner crowd waved South African flags and defiantly played "Die Stem van Suid-Afrika" despite promises made to ANC from SARFU not to do so. What should have been an opportunity for harmony became an act of white defiance. Nevertheless, amidst these tensions, ten South Africans made their international debuts on that day. This print serves as a poignant reminder of both triumphs and struggles faced by South Africa during its journey towards inclusivity in sports and society as a whole. It encapsulates how even within moments of celebration, deep-rooted divisions can persistently linger beneath the surface.
