EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment from the 1976 Montreal Olympics - Women's Gymnastics, specifically the Women's Floor Exercise. In this image, we see two talented gymnasts representing Great Britain, Susan Cheesebrough on the left and Barbara Slater on the far right. The intense atmosphere of competition is palpable as they perform their routines in front of a captivated audience at the iconic Montreal Forum in Quebec, Canada. Beyond her achievements as an Olympic athlete, Barbara Slater has carved out an impressive career for herself. Currently serving as the first female director of BBC Sport, she has shattered glass ceilings and paved the way for future generations of women in sports leadership roles. Interestingly enough, she comes from a family with deep sporting roots; her father Bill Slater was not only a renowned footballer who triumphed in both League and FA Cup competitions but also served as President of the Gymnastics Association during its financial crisis in 1989. Barbara Slater's lineage extends further into sporting greatness through her uncle John Warr, an ex-Middlesex cricket player and President of MCC (Marylebone Cricket Club). This remarkable photo serves as a testament to not only Barbara's personal accomplishments but also to her family's rich history within various sports disciplines. Preserved by Colorsport Images photographer Stewart Fraser during these memorable Games of the XXI Olympiad held in 1976, this photograph encapsulates both athletic prowess and familial legacy that continue to inspire today.
