EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting print captures "The gibbet of Montfaucon" an engraving by the French School in the 19th century. The image, housed in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, France, depicts a chilling scene from history. Once located outside Paris between La Villette and Les Buttes-Chaumont, Montfaucon was a town known for its infamous gibbet. This structure served as a gallows where criminals met their grim fate through capital punishment during the Middle Ages. However, by the 17th century, this macabre site fell into disuse and was eventually demolished in 1761. In this photograph, we see onlookers gathered around the scaffold while a solitary crow perches atop it. The presence of these crows adds to the eerie atmosphere surrounding death penalty scenes like this one. A lifeless corpse hangs from ropes tied to the gallows – a stark reminder of past justice systems that employed public executions as deterrents. "The gibbet of Montfaucon" serves as both a historical artifact and an unsettling reflection on humanity's darker chapters. It invites contemplation about society's evolving views on punishment and crime throughout time.
