5925085 2nd Life Guards, Guard Room, 1828 circa (oil on panel) by Pickersgill, Frederick Richard (1820-1900); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: 2nd Life Guards, Guard Room, 1828 circa.
Oil on panel by F R Pickersgill, (1820-1900), 1851.
The Life Guards are the senior regiment of the British Army. They trace their origins back to 1660 when four troops of horse guards were raised by King Charles II around the time of his restoration.
In 1815 the Life Guards led the Household Brigades charge at Waterloo against their French heavy cavalry equivalents. This was to prove their last active service until the 1880s, though the mid-19th century saw them putting down the Gordon, Spitalfields and Burdett riots in London.); eNational Army Museum; English, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the "2nd Life Guards, Guard Room" in 1828. Painted by Frederick Richard Pickersgill in oil on panel, this artwork offers a glimpse into the daily lives of the senior regiment of the British Army. The Life Guards can trace their origins back to 1660 when King Charles II raised four troops of horse guards during his restoration. In this painting, we see guardsmen engaged in various activities within their guard room. A soldier stands proudly with his loyal dog by his side while others enjoy moments of recreation and leisure. Some are seen reading newspapers or playing musical instruments like drums, showcasing their diverse interests beyond military duties. The historical significance of the Life Guards is highlighted through their last active service at Waterloo in 1815 against French heavy cavalry equivalents. However, until the 1880s, they were primarily involved in maintaining order during riots such as Gordon, Spitalfields, and Burdett riots that plagued London during the mid-19th century. Through this remarkable artwork preserved at the National Army Museum in London, viewers are transported back to a time where soldiers found solace amidst duty and camaraderie within these walls. It serves as a testament to both military history and human experiences within an esteemed regiment that has stood strong for centuries.
