Giraffes, mother feeding baby, Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

The reticulated giraffe (Giraffa reticulate), also known as the Somali giraffe, is a species of giraffe native to the Horn of Africa. It lives in Somalia, southern Ethiopia, and northern Kenya. There are approximately 8, 500 individuals living in the wild. The reticulated giraffe was described and given its binomial name by British zoologist William Edward de Winton in 1899, however the IUCN currently recognizes only one species of giraffe with nine subspecies. Reticulated giraffes can interbreed with other giraffe species in captivity or if they come into contact with populations of other species in the wild. Together with the Rothschilds giraffe, it is by far the giraffe most commonly seen in zoos. Its coat consists of large, polygonal, liver colored spots outlined by a network of bright white lines. The blocks may sometimes appear deep red and may also cover the legs

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a heartwarming moment between a mother giraffe and her baby in the breathtaking Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya. The reticulated giraffe, also known as the Somali giraffe, is native to the Horn of Africa and can be found in Somalia, southern Ethiopia, and northern Kenya. With only approximately 8,500 individuals remaining in the wild, this species holds great significance for conservation efforts. Described by British zoologist William Edward de Winton in 1899, the reticulated giraffe boasts a unique coat pattern consisting of large liver-colored spots outlined by intricate white lines that form polygonal shapes. In some instances, these blocks may appear deep red and even extend to cover their long legs. In addition to its natural habitat, this particular species thrives within zoo environments alongside Rothschilds giraffes. Their ability to interbreed with other giraffe species both in captivity and occasionally when encountering different populations in the wild adds another layer of fascination to their existence. Photographer Danita Delimont skillfully captures this intimate scene without any human presence distracting from nature's beauty. This vertical image showcases two majestic animals standing tall against an outdoor backdrop during daylight hours. As you admire this stunning print from Fine Art Storehouse, let it serve as a reminder of the delicate balance we must maintain to protect these magnificent creatures and preserve their habitats for generations to come.
