Vanderbilt Mansion
circa 1920: An exterior view of the Cornelius Vanderbilt Mansion, located on Fifth Avenue and 58th Street in Manhattan, New York City. Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794 - 1877) was president of the New York and Harlem Railroad. The French Ch?teau-style mansion was one of only three houses on Fifth Avenue to take up an entire block-front (the other two were the Carnegie and Frick residences). Designed in 1893 by architect George B. Post. The Bergdorf Goodman department store was erected on this site in 1928. (Photo by Edwin Levick/Hulton Archive/Getty Images)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the grandeur of the Vanderbilt Mansion, a true architectural gem nestled in the heart of Manhattan's Fifth Avenue. Dating back to 1920, this exterior view transports us to an era when opulence and elegance reigned supreme. The mansion, designed by renowned architect George B. Post in 1893, exudes French Château-style splendor. Cornelius Vanderbilt, a prominent figure as president of the New York and Harlem Railroad during his lifetime (1794 - 1877), called this magnificent abode home. Standing proudly on an entire block-front alongside only two other prestigious residences – Carnegie and Frick – it symbolizes the epitome of luxury. As we gaze upon this timeless image captured by Edwin Levick, we can't help but imagine ourselves strolling along bustling Fifth Avenue in one of those vintage cars or buses that line the street. This photograph not only captures a moment frozen in time but also serves as a testament to American culture and history. Although now replaced by Bergdorf Goodman department store since its construction in 1928, the legacy of Cornelius Vanderbilt's mansion lives on through archival images like these. Its presence continues to inspire awe and admiration for both its architectural brilliance and its significance within New York City's rich tapestry. In this black and white landscape format print from Fine Art Storehouse, viewers are transported back to an era where railroads shaped North America's growth while simultaneously marveling at the grandeur that once graced Fifth Avenue's cityscape.
