Army Exercises

20th August 1955: Soldiers of the Black Watch going through their exercises at the Black Watch Depot, Queens Barracks, Perth. The Black Watch, Am Freiceadan Dubh in Gaelic, was founded in 1739 and a cairn marks the spot between the Tay Bridge and Aberfeldy where the regiment was first mustered in 1740. It was the first regiment to introduce Highland dress as a uniform and wear kilts in the traditional dark tartan. They also earned the right to wear red hackles in their regimental caps for courageous conduct in Flanders in 1795. Standing tall and proud, soldiers of the renowned Scottish regiment can be seen going through their rigorous drills at the Black Watch Depot in Queens Barracks, Perth. Founded in 1739, this legendary regiment holds a significant place in military history. The cairn between Tay Bridge and Aberfeldy marks where they were first mustered back in 1740.
