VISUAL DESCRIPTION
This is an ancient Egyptian canopic jar, featuring a lid sculpted in the form of a human head. The jar itself appears to be made of clay or stone with hieroglyphic inscriptions on its surface, which were likely used to identify the contents and perhaps offer protection through spells. Canopic jars were used during the mummification process to store and preserve internal organs of the deceased, each organ guarded by one of the Four Sons of Horus. This particular jar might have held the stomach, liver, intestines, or lungs—each protected by a specific deity represented on the lids: Imsety (human head), Hapy (baboon head), Duamutef (jackal head), and Qebehsenuef (falcon head). The craftsmanship suggests it dates from one of Egypt's dynastic periods when such burial practices were common.
