EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the enigmatic Anne Germaine De Stael-Holstein, a prominent figure in French literature and politics during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The portrait, taken in 1933 by an unknown creator, showcases her striking beauty and intellectual prowess. Born in Paris to Jacques Necker, a renowned French statesman and financier, De Stael was destined for greatness. However, her life was marked by unhappiness due to her ill-fated marriage to Erik Magnus Stael von Holstein, the Swedish ambassador to France. Despite this setback, she found solace in numerous affairs throughout her lifetime. One of her most notable liaisons was with Benjamin Constant, an influential author and political philosopher of that era. Their relationship not only fueled their personal lives but also sparked intellectual debates that shaped French society at the time. The circular cigarette-card portrait miniature is part of "Gestalten Der Weltgeschichte" a book featuring historical figures from around the world spanning four centuries. This particular image highlights De Stael's love for music as she elegantly plays a lyre—a symbol of creativity and artistic expression. De Stael's legacy as an accomplished writer continues to inspire generations today. Her contributions have left an indelible mark on French literature and politics alike. Through this mesmerizing photograph print, we are transported back in time to witness the brilliance of Anne Germaine De Stael-Holstein—an extraordinary woman who defied societal norms and made history with her words.
