The Brandenburg Gate, Berlin, 19th century. Artist: Johann Poppei
The Brandenburg Gate, Berlin, 19th century. The only remaining city gate of Berlin, the Brandenburg Gate was commissioned by Frederick William II of Prussia. Built by Carl Gotthard Langhans between 1789 and 1793, it was modelled on the propylaeum, the entrance to the Acropolis in Athens. Topped by a Quadriga of Victory, a chariot drawn by four horses, the gate stands at the western end of the Unter den Linden. The partition of Berlin and the building of the Berlin Wall meant that the gate was inaccessible to East and West Germans from 1961-1989

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Brandenburg Gate, Berlin, 19th century. Artist: Johann Poppei This print transports us back to the 19th century, capturing the timeless beauty of The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. Standing proudly as the only remaining city gate of Berlin, this iconic landmark was commissioned by Frederick William II of Prussia and built between 1789 and 1793 by Carl Gotthard Langhans. Inspired by the grandeur of Athens' Acropolis entrance, Langhans modeled The Brandenburg Gate after the propylaeum. Its magnificent architecture is further enhanced by a Quadriga of Victory crowning its summit – a chariot drawn by four majestic horses. The gate's historical significance cannot be understated. During the partition of Berlin and construction of the infamous Berlin Wall from 1961 to 1989, it stood as a symbol of division and inaccessibility for both East and West Germans. In this monochrome engraving captured by Johann Poppei, we are transported to Unter den Linden – one of Berlin's most famous streets where The Brandenburg Gate majestically stands at its western end. This print not only showcases remarkable architectural detail but also serves as a reminder of Germany's tumultuous past. As we gaze upon this stunning piece, let us appreciate not just its artistic value but also reflect on how history has shaped our world today.
