EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the intense combat between Roman and Veneti vessels on the Loire River in 56 BC. The artist, Dietrich, skillfully captures the chaos and violence of this historic naval battle that took place during Julius Caesar's conquest of Gaul. The Veneti, a Gallic tribe residing in Brittany, fiercely resisted Roman domination. However, their efforts were ultimately crushed by Caesar's forces in the Battle of Morbihan. In this scene from a bas-relief on the walls of Narbonne, we witness the desperate struggle as both sides clash with oars and ramming tactics. The print showcases the dramatic moment when flames engulf one of the ships, adding to the intensity and danger faced by these ancient warriors. The monochrome aesthetic enhances the sense of historical significance while emphasizing key details such as soldiers armed with bows defending their vessels. As we admire this artwork, we are transported back to an era where warships dominated rivers like the Loire. It serves as a reminder not only of France's rich history but also highlights how conflict has shaped our world throughout time. This remarkable print is part of "La France et les Francais a Travers les Siecles". Volume I edited by F Roy in Saint-Antoine between 1882-1884. Preserved for generations to come thanks to The Print Collector collection, it allows us to appreciate both artistic talent and historical events that have shaped our understanding of warfare at sea.
