The Cromwell family, 1899

The Cromwell family, 1899. Oliver Cromwell, Robert Cromwell, Elizabeth Cromwell (sr) and Elizabeth Cromwell (jr). Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658), Lord Protector of England, 1899. Cromwell was a Member of Parliament at the outbreak of the English Civil War in 1642. As one of the judges at the trial of King Charles I in 1649, Cromwell signed the kings death warrant and became Lord Protector of England in 1653. He died in 1668 and was succeeded as Lord Protector by his son, Richard. Although Richard was not entirely without ability, he had no power base in either Parliament or the Army and was forced to resign in May 1659, bringing the Protectorate to an end. In the period immediately following his abdication the head of the army, George Monck, took power for less than a year, at which point Parliament restored Charles II as king. One of Charles first acts was to exhume Cromwells body from Westminster Abbey and hang it from the gallows at Tyburn; his head was set on a pole on top of Westminster Hall. From The Century Magazine, 1899

The Cromwell Family, 1899 - A Glimpse into the Lives of England's Powerful Figures

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print showcases the esteemed Cromwell family in 1899. Pictured are Oliver Cromwell, Robert Cromwell, Elizabeth Cromwell (sr), and Elizabeth Cromwell (jr). Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658), famously known as Lord Protector of England, played a pivotal role during the English Civil War. As a Member of Parliament at its outbreak in 1642, he later became one of the judges who signed King Charles I's death warrant in 1649. Following Charles I's execution, Oliver assumed power as Lord Protector in 1653 until his death ten years later. His son Richard succeeded him but lacked support from both Parliament and the Army, leading to his resignation and ultimately ending the Protectorate. During this period of political turmoil, George Monck briefly took control before Parliament restored Charles II as king. However, it is worth noting that Charles II did not hold any fondness for Oliver Cromwell. In an act of retribution against his predecessor's legacy, one of Charles' first actions was to exhume Oliver's body from Westminster Abbey. The remains were then hung on gallows at Tyburn while his head was placed atop Westminster Hall on a pole. This remarkable photograph captures not only a moment frozen in time but also serves as a reminder of the complex dynamics that shaped England's history during this era. It offers us insight into the lives and legacies left behind by these influential figures who played significant roles within their nation’s past.
