Early morning, Covent Garden Market, London, 20th century
Early morning, Covent Garden Market, 20th century. Inigo Jones (1573-1652), regarded as the first significant British architect, and the first to bring Renaissance architecture to England, was commissioned by Francis Russell, 4th Earl of Bedford (1593 -1641) to lay out a piazza to the north and east of Bedford House and a church to the west. The square became the site of a fruit, vegetable and flower market, which grew in importance after the Great Fire of London destroyed the sites of rival markets in the City. The market was moved to a new site in 1974 due to increasing traffic congestion

EDITORS COMMENTS
Early morning hustle and bustle at Covent Garden Market, London, captured in a timeless print from the 20th century. Inigo Jones, the visionary British architect who introduced Renaissance architecture to England, was commissioned by Francis Russell, Earl of Bedford, to create a vibrant piazza and church in this very location. This historic square soon became home to a thriving fruit, vegetable, and flower market that gained even more significance after the devastating Great Fire of London wiped out rival markets in the City. The photograph showcases an era when Covent Garden Market was at its peak. The streets are teeming with activity as delivery lorries navigate through crowded roads while pedestrians weave their way through the bustling scene. The image captures not only the architectural beauty of surrounding buildings but also reflects upon an essential part of English history - trade and transportation. Today's viewers can't help but be transported back in time as they observe this snapshot from yesteryears. Although Covent Garden Market has since relocated due to increasing traffic congestion, this photo serves as a poignant reminder of its former glory. It stands as a testament to both Inigo Jones' architectural legacy and the enduring spirit of commerce that has shaped Britain throughout centuries.
