Geometry (from the Tarocchi, series C: Liberal Arts, #24), before 1467
Geometry (from the Tarocchi, series C: Liberal Arts, #24), before 1467. Conceptually, the liberal arts descended from classical antiquity, and represented knowledge or skills considered necessary to participate in a free society. These four personifications of liberal arts are from a set of 50 engravings depicting philosophical concepts and elements of the world. Although they are called Tarocchi, the prints differ from traditional tarot cards in that they were more likely devised by a humanist scholar for educational purposes. Philosophy appears as Athena, goddess of war and wisdom; her shield bearing Medusas head could turn any opponent into stone. Poetry sits crowned with a laurel wreath next to a Greek Castalian font, believed by poets to be a source of inspiration

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Geometry (from the Tarocchi, series C: Liberal Arts, #24), before 1467" takes us back to classical antiquity and the significance of knowledge in a free society. The image showcases four personifications of liberal arts, part of a larger collection of engravings depicting philosophical concepts and elements of the world. Although referred to as Tarocchi, these prints were not traditional tarot cards but rather educational tools devised by a humanist scholar. Philosophy is represented by Athena, the goddess known for her wisdom and war prowess. Her shield bears Medusa's head, capable of turning any opponent into stone. Poetry sits adorned with a laurel wreath beside an ancient Greek Castalian font believed to be a wellspring of inspiration for poets. The artwork itself dates back to the 15th century and features intricate engraving hand-colored with gold accents. It originates from Ferrara in Italy and is attributed to the Master of the E Series Tarocchi—an Italian artist whose identity remains unknown.
