Glendale Land Leaguers Memorial, Skye, Highland, Scotland
Glendale Land Leaguers Memorial, Skye, Highland, Scotland. This memorial in the village of Glendale commemorates five imprisoned crofters known as the Glendale Martyrs. In 1883 tensions were high on Skye between crofters and landowners over grazing rights. After an estate shepherd was assaulted by a group of crofters when he tried to remove their cattle from what had traditionally been common pasture, the police were sent to arrest twenty men held responsible for the assault. Violence ensued and the police were forced to retreat. A government representative arrived by naval gunboat to negotiate with the men of Glendale and it was agreed that a government commission would be set up to investigate the crofters grievances. In return it was agreed that a token five men (the Glendale Martyrs) would stand trial for the assault. The commission, chaired by Lord Napier, recommended mild reforms but with the Highland Land League gaining support and returning four MPs to Parliament in 1885, Gladstones government passed the Crofters Act in 1886 which guaranteed crofters tenure over their land and ended the threat of eviction

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Glendale Land Leaguers Memorial in Skye, Highland, Scotland stands as a powerful testament to the resilience and determination of the crofting community. This print captures the essence of this historic site, where five brave men known as the Glendale Martyrs are commemorated. During a time of great tension in 1883, when disputes over grazing rights reached boiling point between crofters and landowners on Skye, an incident involving an estate shepherd sparked a chain of events that would change history. The assault on the shepherd by a group of crofters led to their arrest and subsequent trial. However, it was not just these five men who stood trial; they represented the grievances and struggles faced by all crofters at that time. Their sacrifice became symbolic for their entire community. Thanks to their bravery and with support from organizations like the Highland Land League, significant reforms were eventually achieved. The Crofters Act passed in 1886 ensured that crofters had tenure over their land and protected them from eviction. This memorial serves as a reminder of how ordinary people can come together to fight for justice and create lasting change. It is a poignant tribute to those who fought against injustice and paved the way for future generations to thrive on their ancestral lands.
