The Hornbills, in the Gardens of the Zoological Society, Regent's Park, 1864. Creator: Pearson

The Hornbills, in the Gardens of the Zoological Society, Regent's Park, 1864. We lately mentioned that Mr. Thompson, the head keeper of the Zoological Society's Gardens in Regent's Park, had returned from Calcutta, bringing with him a large number of rare and valuable animals, presented to the society by the Baboo Rajenda Mullick, Mr. A. Grote, and Mr. W. Dunn...The large hornbills...are magnificent birds, and well worthy of observation. We have engraved a drawing which represents their general appearance. Of this bird, sometimes vulgarly called the horned Indian raven, though it belongs to a different class, the most remarkable species are distinguished by the shape of their horny excrescence, or casque, upon the upper mandible of the bill. In the Buceros rhinoceros it projects like the so-called "horn" of the beast of that name; in the Buceros cavatus it is of a concave shape. They are gregarious birds, and omnivorous in their diet. The colour is partly black and partly a dingy white. The bill is usually about ten inches long'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the majestic Hornbills in the Gardens of the Zoological Society in Regent's Park, dating back to 1864. The head keeper, Mr. Thompson, had recently returned from Calcutta with a collection of rare and valuable animals gifted to the society by generous donors. Among these creatures were the large hornbills, described as magnificent birds that are truly worth observing. The engraving depicts their general appearance, showcasing their unique features such as the shape of their horny excrescence on the upper mandible of the bill. These gregarious birds, known for being omnivorous in diet, exhibit a striking combination of black and dingy white colors. Referred to at times as "horned Indian ravens," although belonging to a different class altogether, these hornbills come in various species distinguished by differences in their casque shapes. From Buceros rhinoceros with its projecting horn-like feature to Buceros cavatus with its concave shape - each bird is a sight to behold. This historical photograph not only serves as a visual delight but also offers insight into the diverse wildlife that has graced Regent's Park over centuries past.
