EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a lady's dress from the 14th century, providing us with a glimpse into the fashion of well-to-do women during the reign of Edward III. The attention to detail is remarkable, as we can observe every element of her attire. The headdress consists of a gorget, couvre-chef, and band, adding an air of elegance to her overall appearance. Her thick plaits gracefully frame her face on either side. The robe she wears is made of luxurious green cloth, exuding opulence and sophistication. Its sleeves are lined in cream silk, showcasing the fine craftsmanship that went into creating this garment. Although only the buttoned sleeves of her kirtle are visible in this illustration, we can imagine how it complements the rest of her ensemble. This image comes from "British Costume during 19 Centuries" by Mrs Charles H Ashdown and was published in London in 1910. It serves as a valuable historical reference for anyone interested in medieval fashion or British cultural heritage. Emily Jessie Ashdown skillfully captured this moment through photography, allowing us to appreciate both the beauty and intricacy present in clothing from centuries past. This print provides insight into not only what people wore but also their social status and taste during this period.
