Loyalty: Catherine Douglas barring the door, at Scone, 1844. Creator: Unknown

Loyalty: Catherine Douglas barring the door, at Scone, 1844. After a fresco by Richard Redgrave, exhibited at Westminster Hall in London: Catherine Douglas barring the door with her arm, to withstand the assassins of James I. of Scotland...Unattended even by a body guard, and confiding in the love of his subjects, James was residing within the walls of the Carthusian Monastery at Scone, which he had founded and endowed. Graham, of Strathearn, seized the occasion, and brought down a party by night to the neighbourhood. Seconded by traitors within, he gained possession of the gates and interior passages...Catherine Douglas, one of the Queens maids of honour, springing forward to bolt the door of the outer apartment, found the bar had been clandestinely removed: with resolute self-devotion she supplied the place with her naked arm. From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol I

Loyalty - Catherine Douglas, a Symbol of Courage and Devotion

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a moment in history that exemplifies unwavering loyalty and bravery. The image depicts Catherine Douglas barring the door at Scone in 1844, inspired by Richard Redgrave's famous fresco exhibited at Westminster Hall in London. In this scene from the fifteenth century, we witness an act of heroism as Catherine Douglas stands alone to protect James I of Scotland. With no bodyguards by his side, James had placed his trust in the love of his subjects while residing within the walls of the Carthusian Monastery he founded. However, traitors within conspired with Graham of Strathearn to gain access to the gates and interior passages. Undeterred by danger, Catherine springs forward to secure the outer apartment door but discovers that its bar has been clandestinely removed. Undaunted, she fearlessly replaces it with her own naked arm – a testament to her resolute self-devotion. This photograph not only commemorates an extraordinary act but also symbolizes loyalty and courage throughout British history. It reminds us that even amidst treachery and uncertainty, there are individuals like Catherine who rise above adversity for their country and their beliefs. As we gaze upon this remarkable image captured by an unknown creator, we are reminded of the power one person can possess when driven by unwavering loyalty and unyielding determination.
