Pipe wrapping to prevent corrosion on steel pipes, Old Denaby, South Yorkshire, 1961
Pipe wrapping to prevent corrosion on steel pipes, Old Denaby, South Yorkshire, 1961. In the days before advances in manufacturing processes enabled plastic pipes to be produced, piping had to be made of steel. To prevent corrosion, the pipes were wrapped in non-corrosive material to protect them. Workers can be seen loading the wrapped pipes onto lorries for delivery to the customer at William Press & Son in the village of Old Denaby. The twin cooling towers of Mexborough Power Station can be seen in the background

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1961 in Old Denaby, South Yorkshire. In an era when plastic pipes were yet to be manufactured, steel piping was the norm. However, this presented a challenge - preventing corrosion. To combat this issue, workers diligently wrapped each pipe with non-corrosive material for protection. The image showcases dedicated workers loading these carefully wrapped pipes onto lorries at William Press & Son, ready for delivery to their customers. The backdrop of Mexborough Power Station's twin cooling towers adds an industrial charm to the scene. This photograph captures not only a moment in time but also represents the ingenuity and craftsmanship of British steelworkers during that period. It serves as a testament to the hard work and dedication put forth by these men who played a vital role in building Britain's infrastructure. Through monochrome tones and sharp details, we are transported back to witness this essential process unfold before our eyes. The composition highlights both the scale of the operation and individual efforts made by each worker involved.
