EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a significant moment in Swansea's history, as the inhabitants of the town present a Loving Cup and a silver salver to their former Mayor, M.J. Michael, in 1850. The presentation took place as a token of esteem and respect for Michael's diligent and impartial services as a Borough Magistrate. The Loving Cup, designed by a local Swansea artist named Hennessey, stands at 20 inches high and is adorned with a basso-relievo of the Visitation of the Sick. The reverse of the cup is inscribed with the names of numerous townspeople who contributed to the gift. The salver, made by Barnard and Sons of London, complements the cup and adds to the grandeur of the presentation. The significance of this gift lies in the context of the time. In 1849, Swansea and its neighboring communities were struck by a deadly cholera epidemic. Michael's unwavering commitment to promoting and personally superintending sanitary precautions saved Swansea from the devastating impact of the disease. The presentation of the Loving Cup and the silver salver was a testament to the townspeople's gratitude and admiration for Michael's courageous and selfless actions during a time of crisis. This photograph, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, is a valuable historical record of a moment of community pride and appreciation. The image, with its intricate details, provides a glimpse into the Victorian era and the importance of public health and community spirit during times of crisis.
