Simone Simon (1910-2005), French actress, c1930s-c1940s

Simone Simon (1910-2005), French actress, c1930s-c1940s. Simon made her screen debut in Le Chanteur Inconnu (The Unknown Singer, 1931) and quickly established herself as one of Frances most successful film actresses. After seeing her in Lac Aux Dames (Ladies Lake, 1934), Darryl F. Zanuck took her to Hollywood in 1936 with a widespread publicity campaign. However her films for 20th Century Fox were only moderately successful and she returned, dissatisfied, to France in 1938. With the outbreak of World War II she returned to Hollywood and RKO Studios where she achieved her greatest successes in English language cinema with The Devil and Daniel Webster (1941) and the horror films Cat People (1942) and The Curse of the Cat People (1944). Unfortunately, these films did not lead to greater success and she languished in mediocre films until the end of the war

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the timeless beauty and talent of Simone Simon, a renowned French actress who graced the screens during the 1930s and 1940s. With her enigmatic smile and undeniable charm, Simon quickly rose to prominence in France as one of the most successful film actresses of her time. Her journey took an exciting turn when Darryl F. Zanuck, impressed by her performance in "Lac Aux Dames" brought her to Hollywood in 1936 with great fanfare. However, despite a widespread publicity campaign, Simon's films for 20th Century Fox achieved only moderate success. Disappointed with these outcomes, she returned to France in 1938. With World War II looming over Europe, Simon found herself back in Hollywood at RKO Studios where she experienced her greatest triumphs on English language cinema screens. Her roles in movies like "The Devil and Daniel Webster" (1941) and the horror classics "Cat People" (1942) and "The Curse of the Cat People" (1944) solidified her status as a talented actress. Unfortunately, despite these notable achievements, greater success eluded Simone Simon after the war ended. She found herself starring in mediocre films until fading from the spotlight. Through this mesmerizing black-and-white portrait captured by an unknown creator from The Print Collector collection, we are reminded of Simone Simon's contributions to both French and American cinema during a transformative era for film-making.
