EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print showcases a Vietnam tour jacket with Black Power embroidery, created by the Saha Union Group in 1971-1972. The black jacket, most likely worn by an African-American soldier during the Vietnam War, bears discolored white embroidery on its back. At the center is an image of a fist wearing a diamond-patterned bracelet with the words "BLACK POWER" boldly displayed. Above and below the fist are letterings that read "BLACK UNITY / VIETNAM / 71 - 72" symbolizing solidarity within the black community during this tumultuous time. The jacket also features a circular patch on its left breast, embroidered in black, red, and green. Within this patch are two clasped hands representing unity and strength. Surrounding it are words forming another circle: "BLACK" "PRIDE" and "CULTURE". Additionally, vibrant embroidered dragons adorn both sleeves in shades of green, red, off-white, and yellow. With its collared design and diagonal welt pockets on each side, this jacket exudes both style and symbolism. Its dark gold zipper pull reads "VENUS" vertically—a unique touch to an already remarkable piece. Preserved at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), this artifact represents not only fashion but also serves as a testament to civil rights movements of that era. It stands as a reminder of African Americans' fight for equality while serving their country amidst war—an embodiment of heritage art that continues to inspire generations today.
