View of the entrance to Avacha Bay, taken from Starichkov Island, 19th century. Creators: Friedrich Heinrich Kittlitz, Jules David

View of the entrance to Avacha Bay, taken from Starichkov Island, 19th century. One of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the round-the-world voyage of the corvette Seniavin commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and carried out in 1826-29 under the command of Captain Fedor Litke (the Russian version of the name of Count Friedrich Lu¨tke, a Baltic German). The expedition began in Kronstadt (the main imperial Russian naval base near Saint Petersburg where Russian circumnavigations typically began and ended); it then traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. This voyage was one of many Russian scientific naval surveys in the first part of the 19th century

EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph, titled 'View of the entrance to Avacha Bay, taken from Starichkov Island,' is an exquisite piece of 19th century artistry. The image was created by renowned German-Russian explorers Friedrich Heinrich Kittlitz and Jules David as part of a series of 65 lithographs that accompanied a comprehensive volume of maps produced after the groundbreaking round-the-world voyage of the Russian corvette Seniavin. Commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and led by Captain Fedor Litke, this expedition embarked from Kronstadt, Russia, and traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. The scene depicted in this lithograph showcases the entrance to Avacha Bay, as viewed from Starichkov Island in the Kamchatka Krai, Russia. The image captures a group of men, likely part of the expedition team, gathered on the beach, with their tents and campsite in the foreground. In the background, the rugged coastline and the vast expanse of the ocean meet at the bay's entrance, creating a stunning contrast of land and sea. The intricate details in this lithograph, produced by the Freres Thierry publishing house in France, provide a glimpse into the rich heritage of exploration and scientific discovery during the 19th century. This piece is a testament to the meeting of frontiers and the spirit of adventure that characterized this era. The View of the entrance to Avacha Bay, taken from Starichkov Island, is an essential addition to any collection of historical or geographical art and serves as a reminder of the significant role Russia played in the exploration and mapping of the world during this period.
