Regent Theatre Hanley NWC01_01_0211

Regent Theatre, Piccadilly, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. A view from the stage looking out on the auditorium of the Regent Theatre, where a group of people is gathered, showing the ceiling dome above
The Regent Theatre opened in February 1929. In 1950 the cinema was renamed the Gaumont Cinema, and in 1976 it became the Odeon. The cinema closed in October 1989 and remained unoccupied until the mid 1990s, when it was renovated before reopening in 1999. The renovation work included enlargement of the stage and alterations to the auditorium. The proscenium arch was removed and repositioned, and the dome was altered; this photograph shows the dome after renovation and has therefore been dated to post-1999

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the grandeur and history of the Regent Theatre in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. Taken from the stage, it offers a breathtaking view of the auditorium filled with a group of people eagerly awaiting a performance. The focal point of this stunning image is undoubtedly the magnificent ceiling dome that gracefully hovers above, adding an air of elegance to the space. Originally opened in February 1929 as the Regent Theatre, this iconic cinema underwent several name changes over time. In 1950, it was renamed Gaumont Cinema before becoming Odeon in 1976. Unfortunately, its doors closed in October 1989 and remained vacant until its revival in the mid-1990s when extensive renovations took place. The renovation work not only included enlarging the stage but also making alterations to enhance the overall experience within the auditorium. The proscenium arch was removed and repositioned while modifications were made to transform and modernize the dome itself. This particular photograph showcases these post-1999 renovations, highlighting how they have breathed new life into this historic venue. As we gaze upon this image captured by Norman Walley, we are reminded of both past glory and present-day splendor that continues to make Regent Theatre a beloved cultural landmark for theater enthusiasts alike.
