Breathing apparatus JLP01_14_00169
BRITISH LIBRARY, EUSTON ROAD, ST PANCRAS, CAMDEN, GREATER LONDON. Four men in hard hats and breathing apparatus during a safety training exercise at the British Library.
Everyone on the course had to climb the ladder in the 2m diameter mock-up foundation shaft from a trial depth of 5m wearing breathing apparatus. This was to replicate the conditions of working at the base of shafts to secure the foot of the steel columns that would support the 5 basement book storage levels. 119 steel columns with brackets to support the basement floor slabs were installed in 20m deep 2m diameter shafts which were lined with corrugated steel and backfilled with pea gravel ballast. The columns were exposed in stages as each basement level was excavated and the floor slabs constructed

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a moment of intense safety training at the iconic British Library in Greater London. Four courageous men, donned in hard hats and breathing apparatus, are seen participating in a crucial exercise. The task at hand required each individual to ascend a ladder within a 2-meter diameter mock-up foundation shaft from a trial depth of 5 meters while wearing their protective gear. The purpose behind this rigorous exercise was to simulate the challenging conditions faced by workers who were responsible for securing the foot of steel columns supporting five basement book storage levels. A total of 119 steel columns with brackets were installed within deep 20-meter shafts lined with corrugated steel and backfilled with pea gravel ballast. As construction progressed, these vital columns were gradually exposed as each basement level was excavated and floor slabs were meticulously constructed. This meticulous attention to detail ensured the stability and durability of this architectural marvel that houses countless literary treasures. The vibrant orange hues of their personal protective equipment serve as a stark reminder of the importance placed on safety during such endeavors. This remarkable photograph is not just an archival record but also encapsulates the dedication and commitment exhibited by those involved in constructing one of London's most cherished landmarks - the British Library.
