Joining deck units JLP01_11_60072_11

Second Severn Crossing, M4 Motorway, New Passage, Pilning and Severn Beach, South Gloucestershire. A view looking east from the top of the Second Severn Crossing during its construction, showing work being carried out to join the units on the bridge deck below.
The Second Severn Crossing took four years to build and was a joint civil engineering project between Laing Civil Engineering and the French company GTM. The work started in April 1992 and the opening ceremony later took place on 5th June 1996. The crossing is a cable-stayed bridge which stretches over 5000 metres across the River Severn connecting England and Wales, 3 miles downstream from the Severn Bridge which opened in 1966

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in the construction of the Second Severn Crossing, an iconic cable-stayed bridge that connects England and Wales. Taken from atop the bridge during its construction, the image showcases workers diligently joining deck units on the bridge below. The Second Severn Crossing project was a remarkable collaboration between Laing Civil Engineering and French company GTM, spanning four years from April 1992 to its grand opening ceremony on June 5th, 1996. With its completion, this engineering marvel stretched over an impressive distance of 5000 meters across the majestic River Severn. Situated just three miles downstream from its predecessor, the original Severn Bridge which opened in 1966, this new crossing played a vital role in enhancing transportation links between England and Wales. The strategic location of New Passage, Pilning and Severn Beach in South Gloucestershire served as a backdrop for this monumental undertaking. As we gaze upon this historic photograph by A© Historic England Archive, we are reminded of both human ingenuity and collaborative efforts that brought forth such magnificent infrastructure. This image not only encapsulates a significant milestone in British civil engineering but also serves as a testament to progress and connectivity achieved through meticulous planning and tireless dedication.
