EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of Filton Airfield, South Gloucestershire. The image showcases a sheepsfoot roller diligently carrying out compaction work during the construction of the runway. In the 1940s, Filton Airfield underwent extensive expansion to accommodate the Bristol Brabazon airliner, which was being built at this very location. The project involved extending the runway westwards, resulting in a remarkable new structure that measured an impressive 2,725 yards long and 100 yards wide. To make way for this ambitious development, Charlton village had to be requisitioned and removed from its original site. As construction commenced in July 1946, a temporary flying strip was laid down to ensure uninterrupted operations while the new runway took shape. John Maltby's expertly captured photograph not only highlights the intricate machinery employed during this transformative period but also pays homage to the dedication and hard work put forth by those involved in constructing such an essential infrastructure. As we gaze upon this historical snapshot today, it serves as a reminder of how progress often requires sacrifice and innovation. This image is not just about heavy machinery or construction; it represents human ambition reaching for new heights amidst challenging circumstances.
